cordTissue

Cord blood is the blood that is in the umbilical cord and placenta after birth. It is a very rich source of stem cells.

What It is

Cord tissue is actually the cord itself. It contains stem cells that are typically not found in cord blood.

After the baby is safely born and the cord is cut, blood remaining in the umbilical cord is collected. It is fast and painless for both mother and baby.

How It Is Collected

A segment of the umbilical cord is cut and sent to a storage facility. This is fast and painless for both mother and baby.

Cord blood contains hematopoetic stem cells (HSC) which can be used to treat a variety of diseases.

What It Contains

Cord tissue contains mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) which are the precursors to bone, cartilage, muscle and fat tissue. In the future, MSCs may enhance cord blood transplants and treat additional conditions.

Cord blood stem cells are currently used to treat more than 80 different diseases. They are often used in bone marrow transplants to replace unhealthy bone marrow with healthy donor cells. Clinical trials are showing promising results in regenerative medicine including treatment of neurological conditions such as autism, cerebral palsy and type 1 diabetes.

What It Is Used For

MSCs may treat additional conditions and are being evaluated in numerous clinical trials for: stroke, multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injury. Clinical uses of MSCs from cord tissue are promising but in the early stages of development.
